Justin & Steph at the Chicago Athletic Association

This couple started their elopement in a stunning hotel, then we took perfect fall photos in Millennium Park!

I get asked this a lot: “How do we make our courthouse wedding extra special? We’re not sure what to do.” For those who decide to elope at the courthouse, it can feel a bit daunting to plan your day. When I help plan these types of weddings, I am more than happy to offer suggestions! My number one answer: stay at a great hotel downtown. You can wake up in a big, luxurious bed on the Magnificent Mile and getting ready together before going to the courthouse. And, since you’re not paying a ton for a venue or catering, it won’t break your budget!

When Justin and Steph told me about their plans to start the day at the Chicago Athletic Association, I was thrilled! This historic hotel is stunning, and you can utilize their lobby if you’re a guest. We met in their hotel room, and I snapped photos of them getting ready together. This is another amazing advantage to eloping: you can spend every moment together, just the two of you! Their hotel room was gorgeous (as are all the rooms at the Chicago Athletic Association!), and after they were ready, we went to the lobby to take advantage of the architecture and natural morning light. (side note: how GORGEOUS is this couple?!)

I unironically love the waiting room at the courthouse. It’s so dated, and it’s so magical. There’s a mirrored silhouette of the Chicago skyline, a giant radiator and AC unit, and the woman who works the front desk plays soft rock out of a little speaker. It’s a whole vibe, and it feels comfortable every time I walk in. Justin and Steph were nervous but excited, and they couldn’t hide their tears once the judge started marrying them (please don’t hide your tears, I love capturing happy crying!).

After they said “I do”, we headed over to Millennium Park and practically had the place to ourselves. Yet another perk of eloping: You can get married on a Wednesday morning while everyone else is working, and the city is yours! The fall colors were extra gorgeous, and Justin and Steph were naturals in front of the camera. Whenever someone tells me they’re awkward in front of the camera, I tell them that’s just not true! All you have to do is look at your partner and make each other laugh, and you will look stunning. And a windswept pose against a fall Chicago sky doesn’t hurt either.

Thank you Justin & Steph for everything. I wish you a lifetime of gorgeous mornings and perfect cups of coffee.
