A beautiful queer moment on the beach at sunset = the best evening ever

8.2.24
August 2nd was a DAY. I capturing an early wedding with an amazing couple, Liz and Timothea, then I headed up to Montrose Beach to be a part of a tear-jerker of a proposal. Ash wanted to make their proposal to Sarah one to remember, and they pulled out all the stops. They created a circle out of long stemmed red roses in the sand, lined the beach with candles, and even surprised Sarah by inviting her friends from out of town. Montrose Beach was the perfect spot for this beautiful proposal, and the sunset made everything feel like a movie. Sarah had no idea that Ash was going to propose, and she was clearly surprised when she stepped onto the beach.

After Ash got down on one knee and Sarah bawled her eyes out, we walked along the beach taking portraits and enjoying the sunset. This couple were so natural with each other, all I had to do was be a fly on the wall and capture their chemistry. For proposals and engagements, I often try not to give too much direction. The couple is already on cloud nine; I’m just lucky enough to be there with them.

Montrose Beach was buzzing with Chicagoans that evening, with everyone enjoying the warm summer air. As Ash and Sarah walked along the water and took in the sunset, their happiness was palpable. Ash told me, as we were planning the proposal, that they were having top surgery just 2 days afterwards. This weekend was more than just a celebration: it was a powerful declaration for both Ash and Sarah of queer joy. And, alongside their closest friends, they made that declaration loud and clear.
Congratulations, Ash and Sarah!
